Basil is a lawyer by profession, graduating from the University of Western Australia in 1986, and later worked for the Perth law firm, Talbot & Olivier.
In 1992 as Director and national General Manager for Superstars & Legends, Basil was instrumental in setting up the sports and entertainment memorabilia industry in Australia. Basil joined IMG in 1995 where he commenced in their Licensing division and then became IMG’s Director of Rugby Union.
In 1997, Basil helped form SEL with James Erskine, Tony Cochrane and David Coe. SEL were an inaugural integral shareholder in V8 Supercars and sold its interests in 2012. The V8’s was one of the fastest growing sports in Australia the 15 years SEL were involved.
Basil has a multi-functional role at SEL including overseeing SEL’s relationship with its sporting federation, clients including the NRL and PGA of Australia. Basil is actively involved with SEL’s 50% joint venture with Velocity Brand Management, Australasia’s leading licencing and merchandising company. Velocity Brand Management acts for every major sport in Australia and New Zealand, and also acts for the International Cricket Council, NBA and the British Lions.
Internationally, Basil has won a Tony Award as a producer of the international hit musical Hairspray, and was involved in the production of The King and I at the Palladium Theatre in London. In addition to theatre productions such as The Producers and The Sound Of Music, Basil has been part of the SEL entertainment team that has enjoyed incredible success with the Mission Estate Concert held in New Zealand each year.
Outside of SEL’s activities, Basil is president of the Bronte Surf Club, the world’s oldest surf club.
