IAN THORPE, OAM

AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST OLYMPIAN

Ian Thorpe is without doubt, one of the most successful sportspeople Australia has ever produced. Overcoming an allergy to chlorine, Ian went on to win the most gold medals of any Australian athlete, and was the youngest to to win a world championship at just 14 years of age.

Ian Thorpe’s accomplishments both in and out of the pool are nothing short of amazing:

In the Pool

  • 9 Olympic medals
  • 11 World Championship titles
  • 10 Commonwealth Games medals
  • Broken 22 World Records
  • 9 Pan Pacific Games titles

Since retiring from the pool in 2011, Ian certainly hasn’t slowed down. He is continually working to improve, educate and better himself and those around him as an activist, advocate and mentor and his hard work has been recognised in both Australia and internationally.

Out of the Pool

  • Awarded an OAM for services to sport
  • Winner of the Australian Sports Medal
  • Named Young Australian of the year
  • Named World Swimmer of the Year on 4 occasions
  • Received a Human Rights Medal in 2012
  • Received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Western Sydney and Macquarie University
  • Ambassador for AIME and both the 2016 and 2018 Invictus Games alongside Prince Harry
  • Partnerships with adidas, Optus, Specsavers and The Star
  • A patron for the charity ReachOut Australia
  • Various media commentary commitments and contributions with Network 7, TEN, the BBC, the ABC, Vogue, SBS and the Huffington Post

A true testament to his character, Ian has been an Ambassador for global sports giant, adidas for over 18 years.
